Star Citizen What's Going On With - AI Blades, Creatures And NPCs

Star Citizen developers are working on improving server performance to enhance AI functionality, aiming for a consistent 30 frames per second. They are also developing AI blades for ship automation, introducing AI creatures into the game, and implementing contextual world lines for AI communication during combat.

In a recent video, Star Citizen developers discussed various updates and improvements to the game’s NPCs and AI. One major focus is improving server performance to ensure smooth AI functionality. Currently, AI behavior can break when the server drops below five frames per second, and struggles when it drops below eight frames per second. The goal is to make AI less reliant on server performance and aim for a consistent 30 frames per second. The developers are continuously working on AI code and network improvements to enhance AI behaviors.

AI blades, which are components that can automate ship functions, such as turret control and targeting systems, are already in the game to some extent. The developers are working on exposing these functionalities to players, allowing them to choose and purchase different types of blades with varying stats and capabilities. AI blades are particularly useful for players who want to run large ships solo or with NPC crew members. However, it seems that AI blades will not be available for players until 2024.

The developers have started working on various AI creatures, some of which are tied to the Squadron 42 single-player campaign. These creatures, like Vandal dogs and the space cow, will eventually make their way into the persistent universe. Additionally, the developers are also working on smaller creatures like birds, bats, fish, and insects, as well as organic collectibles and harvestables. While there are still some issues to solve, the developers are actively introducing these creatures into the game.

The replication layer, which separates the game servers from the client and other services, plays a crucial role in AI functionality. It allows multiple servers to connect to the same shard and efficiently communicate with each other. This technology enables seamless transfer of AI control between servers as players move around the game world. The developers are focused on making this system work consistently and efficiently.

In terms of AI communication, the developers are working on implementing contextual world lines for AI, allowing them to communicate with each other during combat. They also have an alarm system in place for Squadron 42, where guards will call out if a player is detected. The goal is to make AI communication systemic and tied to their behaviors in the persistent universe as well. Additionally, the developers have implemented surrender mechanics for NPCs, allowing them to surrender if they run out of ammo or are trapped. Players will have the ability to restrain NPCs and potentially unrestrain them or hide bodies.
