Star Citizen Alpha 4.3 “Dark Territory” introduces the expansive Onyx facilities with new investigation missions, improved mission distribution, new ships, armor, and gameplay enhancements like dynamic snow and version two ladders, while continuing the resource drive event and fixing numerous bugs. Despite some missing anticipated features and known issues, the update offers fresh content, quality-of-life improvements, and promises more frequent ship additions, engaging the community with new sales, bundles, and ongoing developer support.
Star Citizen Alpha 4.3, titled “Dark Territory,” is now live and introduces a major new gameplay feature centered around the Onyx facilities found on the moons of Stanton. There are 120 of these locations, each with large complexes featuring research and engineering wings, with a third wing planned for the next update (4.3.1). Players can undertake investigation missions at these sites, which include puzzles, mining beam interactions, and combat against numerous enemies. The facilities also contain hangers to protect landed ships and medical stations where players can heal but not respawn yet. The main lobby is a hard armistice zone, meaning no PvP inside, but PvP can occur outside these areas.
The patch also brings improvements to mission distribution technology, helping to spread players across different mission locations such as hauling, Wico missions, and Onyx facility tasks to reduce overcrowding. Wiccolo rewards have been balanced, and several new ships and armor sets are now available, including the Starlance attack ship, a new Gist armor variant, and several ships added to in-game stores like the Drake Gollum, Misfortune, Marai Guardian, and Hornet Ghost Mark 2. The Kruger L21 Wolf light fighter is now flyable in-game, and the developers have promised more frequent and quicker ship additions to the in-game shops in the future.
Gameplay mechanics have received notable updates, including extensive light fighter tuning for better acceleration and maneuverability, the introduction of dynamic snow effects in snowy locations, and the release of version two ladders that require active engagement to climb and allow more realistic movement. Hanger spawning has returned for player logins, with players spawning at their home hangers, and interestingly, logging off at Onyx facilities will cause players to wake up at the medical facilities there. The patch continues the resource drive event from the previous update and includes over 100 bug fixes, improving freight elevator functionality and general gameplay stability.
Additional new content includes three new player hairstyles, a vault laser sniper weapon with a unique charge mechanic and variable zoom, and new ammo and radiation penetrators available in shops. The Gist armor set is designed with stealth features that may make players undetectable by FPS or radar pings in future updates. Quality-of-life improvements include the option to auto-report crimes if notifications are missed, better HUD readability, and login options via Gmail and Twitch. However, some anticipated features like nameplates revealed by pings, cooperative zones, and FPS turrets were not included and may appear in the next patch.
Despite the many additions, there are some known issues such as connection errors, missing AI or NPCs in certain locations, mission bugs, and map display problems within the Onyx facilities. Some elevators and terminals behave incorrectly, and mission markers sometimes persist after completion. The developers are actively working on fixes, and many bugs are intermittent. The patch also offers new store sales and bundles, including the Golden Blossom bundle with exclusive skins and gear. The creator encourages community engagement through comments, giveaways, and support via Patreon or Discord, highlighting an active and growing player community excited to explore the new content.
