Star Citizen Alpha 4.3 introduces the new Onyx facilities with investigation missions tied to the Regen Crisis storyline, adding over 100 abandoned research sites and enhanced mission variety, alongside significant ship rebalancing and gameplay improvements. The update also features new ships, weapons, dynamic weather effects, and technical enhancements like an overhauled ladder system and personal hanger spawning, enriching both narrative and immersive gameplay.
Star Citizen Alpha 4.3 introduces a significant new narrative and gameplay feature called the Onyx facilities, which are abandoned research sites from Associated Sciences and Development (ASD). These facilities serve as the setting for a fresh line of investigation missions tied to the ongoing Regen Crisis storyline. The patch adds around 100 new abandoned installations scattered across the Stanton system, which are now active hotspots for players and mercenary NPCs exploring for secrets, gathering research data, and navigating hazardous conditions. The first two wings of these facilities are accessible in 4.3, with a third wing arriving soon after in a subsequent update.
The storyline is advanced through missions given by Arkham Malor of the Hawkro Agency, where players initially focus on recovering surviving data and uncovering the true nature of ASD’s experiments. After completing the initial phase, players unlock four new mission tracks within the open wings, which must be played sequentially before becoming replayable. These missions involve exploring research labs to find data caches and audio logs explaining the abandonment, and surviving dangerous engineering wings filled with unstable power systems and radiation. To improve gameplay flow, Clan Imperium has updated mission distribution to spread players more evenly across locations, reducing overcrowding.
Gameplay adjustments include rebalancing kill missions with exclusive ship rewards and expanding maximum cargo storage at landing zones to 5,000 SCU. Customization options have been enhanced with three new hairstyles added to character creation. Ship rebalancing is a major focus, particularly for the light fighter class, affecting ships like the Aegis Gladius, Anvil Arrow, and Banu Defender. Changes include adjustments to speed, acceleration, health pools, and flight characteristics to make each ship feel more distinct. Notable highlights include the Gladius losing secondary nose hit points for balance, buffs to maneuverability and stealth for some ships, and fixes to persistent bugs such as the C2’s wingtip issue.
Several new ships have been introduced to the shops, including the Drake Golem, which is being given away in a community event. Other new arrivals include the Misk Fortune, Mi Guardian, Anvil Hornet Mark II, and the F7A Bolt Turret. On the weapons front, the Vault Zenit sniper rifle debuts, combining charge shot power with marksman rifle versatility, requiring heat management to avoid overheating. The Vault shotgun has been fixed, ammo availability has increased across shops, and radiation pens are now purchasable at pharmacies, enhancing survival options.
Technical improvements continue with dynamic snow added to the weather system, bringing snowfall to planets like MicroTech and Bloom, along with new cloud coverage at Bloom’s poles. The ladder system has been overhauled to include new mechanics such as leaning, jumping off, mid-bone entries, and crouch exits, making traversal more natural. Players now spawn directly in their personal hangers at their home location, reinforcing a sense of ownership. Overall, Star Citizen 4.3 advances the game with story-driven exploration, gameplay refinement, ship balancing, and immersive environmental enhancements, contributing to a deeper and more polished experience.
