Over the weekend, the Elite Dangerous community witnessed a significant event in the game - the beginning of the end of the second Thargoid war with the Tanus event in the Hiedi Sector FB-NNB 7-6. Update 18 introduced a new weapon, the Guardian Nanite Torpedo, to fight against Thargoids by targeting the thermal vents on the Titan mother ship. This exposed the vulnerable thermal core that had to be attacked layer by layer.
The community united in a massive effort to take down the Titan Taranis’s eight hearts, with Frontier updating on social media the progress of the assault. Despite Taranis gaining control of another system, the community remained undaunted in their assault. Frontier removed barriers such as material gathering requirements and Glaive interdictions to encourage mass community engagement in the event.
On Friday, the final heart of Taranis was destroyed, leading to its meltdown and impending structural failure within 24 hours. Commanders were urged to witness the final fall of the Titan at Taranis. On Saturday, as the countdown reached its conclusion, Taranis exploded in a massive blast, flinging onlookers backward and leaving behind a dense caustic cloud. The explosion marked the end of Taranis, resembling a small star surrounded by the impenetrable cloud.
The event was described as a jaw-dropping experience, achieving high levels of engagement, immersion, and theater in a live, multiplayer game setting. The community’s focus now shifts to the remaining Titans threatening the bubble, with the next target being the Titan LE Gong in Hip 8887.
