Star Wars Outlaws - SIZE MATTERS - World Design

“Star Wars Outlaws’ developers Massive Entertainment have recently mentioned that players will be able to visit both Mos Eisley as well as its cantina. Additionally, they have discussed the potential for players to tour famous and new areas”

Developers of the upcoming Star Wars Outlaw game are focusing more on detailed world-building than sheer galaxy size. Gamers will be able to explore familiar settings from the iconic Star Wars universe, such as MOS Eisley and its Cantina, in a single-player open world format - a shift from previous multiplayer or online games. The game will also introduce a new location, Tashara, a moon inspired by the African Savannah, featuring a vibrant city built into an eroded rock formation. The developers have indicated the moon and its culture will be heavily influenced by environmental factors, offering a broad scope for exploration and immersion.

The size of the game’s planets has sparked debate among fans. However, developers have confirmed that planets in Star Wars Outlaws will be quite extensive but not massive, with a single planet roughly equivalent to two or three zones from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. A crude calculation estimated these planetary maps could span between 60 to 90 square kilometers, which is fairly larger than the map from Skyrim. For more extensive navigation, developers have proposed the use of a land speeder.

However, there is a concern among some fans that the developers may be overemphasizing exploration, transforming the game into a type of ‘virtual tourism’. Despite these concerns, the developers remain focused on crafting intricately detailed worlds over vast procedurally generated landscapes. The current release date for Star Wars Outlaws is slated for sometime in 2024.
