Star Citizen's New 4.5 Engineering Mechanic is Pure...Chaos! (Hands On)

In this video, Ryan provides a hands-on overview of Star Citizen’s Alpha 4.5 update, highlighting the new engineering role that introduces real-time ship system management to enhance multi-crew gameplay, while noting several promising features like improved ship diagnostics and combat mechanics. However, he also points out current issues such as balancing problems, limited ship armor, and challenging damage control, concluding that the update is not yet ready for a wider release but shows great potential for future improvements.

In this video, Ryan, also known as Mac, provides an overview and hands-on experience with Star Citizen’s Alpha 4.5 update, which has recently been released to the Evocati PTU. He begins by thanking his patrons and channel members for their support and mentions a 20% discount on Game Glass, an app that turns phones or tablets into ship dashboards. Ryan explains that the update introduces a new dedicated engineering role for managing ship systems like power distribution, repairs, and efficiency in real time, aiming to enhance multi-crew gameplay and extend ship survivability beyond the previous version 4.4.

The 4.5 patch brings significant changes including updates to ship armor, heat, power, and life support management, as well as diagnostics and engineering screens. All ships and vehicles now support engineering mechanics, impacting gameplay broadly. Several fixes and balance updates have also been implemented, such as disabling fire from bullet hits, adjusting coolant levels, and modifying radar heat and ship health systems. Additionally, the update improves the Vulcan renderer’s stability and speed, introduces HDR support, and incorporates Nvidia’s DLSS Transformer model, alongside numerous bug fixes.

Ryan shares his brief personal experience testing the update, primarily focusing on the Drake Clipper ship and participating in combat missions. He notes good frame rates even on low graphics settings but experienced a crash when attempting to increase settings during a tram ride. He highlights the addition of a new pop-up Cryastro shop for purchasing repair tools and supplies, which should facilitate ship maintenance. During missions, Ryan observed that NPC ships only explode after being disabled, which changes combat tactics by encouraging players to disable enemies quickly and manage threats more strategically.

However, Ryan encountered several issues with the Clipper in its current state. The ship lacked armor and fire extinguishers, which made managing damage and onboard fires challenging. The engineering terminal displayed limited diagnostic information, complicating system management during combat. In fights, critical damage led to rapid ship disablement and a 30-second countdown to explosion, which felt too short for effective damage control. Fires inside the ship severely impaired visibility, making it difficult to respond adequately, and Ryan suggests that these mechanics need more tuning and balancing before wider release.

In conclusion, Ryan feels the 4.5 update, while promising, is not yet ready for wave 1 backers due to balancing issues and the need for smoother gameplay integration, especially regarding ship damage and repair mechanics. He plans to continue testing more ships and multi-crew scenarios after returning from holiday and will release a detailed video once the NDA lifts. He encourages viewers to support his channel and stay tuned for further content, including streams and additional gameplay episodes.
