In this episode of LoreMaker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Cloud Imperium Games Associate Writer Adam Wieser gives an in-depth guided tour of the Magnus system, home to Drake Interplanetary, one of the leading ship manufacturers in the Star Citizen universe. The Magnus system consists of three planets, with the main focus of activity taking place on Borea. Despite its exceptional location, being on a major trade route between Sol and the Terra system, the Magnus system is notorious for being dangerous and labeled as a frontier system due to certain significant historical events.

The primary reason for the system’s frontier label is its convoluted history. When the UPE first discovered Magnus in 2499, it was a military system with a naval shipyard on the planet Borea. However, these shipyards and the jobs they provided were relocated to the Killian system in the mid-27th century, devastating Magnus’s economy and population causing it to dwindle significantly.

One exception to this economic downturn was Kruger Intergalactic, an industrial company that grew and prospered even as the rest of the economy suffered. Kruger started as a small part manufacturer for larger industries, but after the shipyards left and their facilities were left vacant, Kruger was able to acquire excellent tech equipment cheaply, thus becoming a more prominent industrial player.

However, increasing issues with piracy led to an incident in 2785 when a Kruger shipment meant for RSI was hijacked. The fallout from this led to Kruger feeling the need to move their operations elsewhere, leading to yet another economic collapse in the system. However, a company known as Drake Interplanetary, started manufacturing a new kind of ship for the UEE focusing on modifiable and easy-to-repair designs. Although they didn’t win the military contract for their first model, the Cutlass, they repurposed the ship for the civilian market and have since become a significant name in ship manufacturing.

Today, the Magnus system is still considered the home of Drake Interplanetary and has seen some economic improvement due to the company’s presence. However, it remains dangerous, as demonstrated by a recent attempted assassination of the governor’s council in the capital city, Newcastle. Despite its reputation, it is worth noting that the Speaker of the UEE Senate, Marshall Madrigal, and famed musician, Gal Dougan, both hail from Borea in the Magnus System, adding an intriguing layer of cultural heritage to the system.
