Cloud Imperium Games has outlined how it intends to use instancing in Star Citizen: as a selective tool for missions and interactions that benefit from controlled player groups, rather than as a replacement for the game’s shared persistent universe.
The approach has drawn attention through the reworked Siege of Orison activity, described in developer discussions as a closed instance intended for a small group. The aim is to let participants complete curated encounters without competition, disruption or unpredictable crowding from unrelated players. Reports covering the comments characterize the current four-player limit as a technical constraint rather than a permanent design target.
Developers have stressed that instancing and dynamic server meshing serve different purposes. Dynamic server meshing is intended to distribute simulation workloads for the persistent universe across servers, while instancing deliberately creates separate versions of a particular activity or space. The systems may work together, but instancing is not meant to divide entire landing zones or cities into isolated copies, according to the explanations.
Examples discussed include private or reserved mission areas, NPC interactions and spaces that can be scaled for different group sizes. CIG has also described a related use called phasing, which could place players in separate versions of the same location without an obvious loading screen. That could support more private conversations with mission givers or help protect personal hangars from interference by other players.
The developers’ stated challenge is preserving the social and unpredictable character of the open world while making repeatable content more reliable. Future uses could range from solo scenarios to larger PvE or PvP activities, depending on the needs of a mission, though the scope and timing of those implementations remain subject to development.
Additional planned curated areas have been discussed by community coverage, including “The Depths,” a repeatable underground activity envisioned for landing zones. Those concepts would expand local mission options while keeping the broader persistent universe as the main shared setting.
