Star Citizen C-788 tests suggest 4.10 nerf may still leave the cannon stronger in ship fights

Community testing of Star Citizen’s C-788 cannon suggests that a balance nerf in version 4.10 may not have made the weapon worse in practice. Across multiple test runs comparing 4.9 and 4.10, creators reported that the gun’s raw damage was reduced and its explosive rounds were removed, but bug fixes and a more focused damage profile may have made it more effective in ship combat anyway.

One tester said the C-788 in 4.9 had high damage and explosive rounds, but also showed a bug where splash damage behavior could make its effectiveness inconsistent. In 4.10, the weapon reportedly behaves more like a direct-damage cannon, with less splash and more concentrated hits on the center of a target. That change, combined with a functioning staggered fire mode, appeared to improve performance in live combat despite the official nerf.

The tests also suggest the weapon may be especially strong in mixed loadouts. On a Corsair equipped with two M7A guns and four C-788s, the ship was shown destroying a Constellation quickly. A comparison build using all-Deadbolt weapons performed similarly, but not clearly better, leading the creator to describe the C-788 setup as competitive or possibly superior in that configuration.

A separate test series likewise concluded that the cannon remained a strong option after the nerf. That creator noted that the 4.10 version appeared to land damage more directly on target, did not overheat in the same way as some alternatives, and performed well against tougher ships including a Firebird, a Connie and even a Hammerhead encounter. Although bugs in the testing environment still limited some loadout experiments, the overall verdict was favorable.

The reports are based on creator-led gameplay tests rather than official performance data, so the exact impact of the changes may vary by ship, loadout and patch conditions. Still, the early takeaway from live testing is that the C-788’s 4.10 nerf may have shifted it into a more reliable ship-killing role rather than making it weaker overall.
