Squadron 42 Moved to Q2 2027 as CIG Cites GTA 6 Release Window
Cloud Imperium Games has moved the planned release of its single-player space-combat game Squadron 42 from late 2026 to the second quarter of 2027, saying it wants to avoid being eclipsed by the expected launch window for Grand Theft Auto 6.
Chris Roberts said the studio had previously intended to ship Squadron 42 in the fourth quarter of 2026, around its Intergalactic Aerospace Expo event. But he argued that the attention surrounding Rockstar Games’ next major release would leave limited room for press and creator coverage of another high-profile game.
Although GTA 6 is not expected to launch on PC in that window, Roberts said its release would still dominate gaming coverage. CIG therefore selected Q2 2027 as a more favorable period for Squadron 42.
No specific date yet
The new Q2 2027 target is not a firm release date. CIG says a small group of original backers and long-running Star Citizen content creators will be able to play Squadron 42 on October 9 and 10, with further details on its release plans and a specific date expected afterward.
The game, initially conceived as the single-player component of Star Citizen, has had a long and repeatedly revised development timeline. CIG said in 2023 that it was “content complete,” meaning its planned material was in place and the focus could shift to polishing and bug fixing. The latest delay has nevertheless renewed questions among players about how close the game is to launch-ready condition.
Fans debate whether GTA 6 is the whole explanation
Commentary within the Star Citizen community has broadly agreed that avoiding a release collision with GTA 6 makes commercial sense. Some creators have characterized the decision as a straightforward marketing move, arguing that Squadron 42 would struggle to command attention during one of the industry’s biggest launches.
Others are less convinced that competition is the sole factor. They point to the project’s lengthy development, continuing work across CIG, and technical problems seen in recent Star Citizen demonstrations as reasons to suspect that further polish or development may also be needed.
Additional theories — including the possibility of expanded VR support or a console version — remain speculation. CIG has not said that VR work, console plans, or unfinished technology contributed to the revised schedule.
For now, CIG’s stated rationale is release timing and visibility. The October hands-on sessions, followed by the promised date announcement, are expected to offer the clearest near-term indication of whether Squadron 42 remains on track for its Q2 2027 target.
