Reported Steam achievements fuel Squadron 42 release speculation
Reports of apparent Steam achievement data for Cloud Imperium Games’ long-awaited single-player space combat game Squadron 42 have renewed speculation that it could be released through Valve’s PC storefront.
The material, which circulated through community discussion and was subsequently covered by several Star Citizen creators, is not independently verified. Cloud Imperium Games has not announced a Steam version, a release date or details of any distribution plans for Squadron 42.
Creators who discussed the reported data said the achievement names appeared to correspond with elements previously associated with the game, including first-person missions, rescue operations, combat and equipment. However, achievement listings alone would not establish that a public Steam launch is imminent, or confirm the contents of a final game.
A Steam release would represent a notable change in distribution for the project, which has traditionally been sold through Cloud Imperium’s own Roberts Space Industries storefront. Commentators have pointed to Steam’s reach, platform features and centralized library as possible advantages, while also noting the storefront’s revenue share and its review and refund systems.
Some discussion has extended to whether owners who bought Squadron 42 directly from RSI could receive Steam keys, and whether the multiplayer-focused Star Citizen persistent universe might also arrive on Steam. Neither possibility has been confirmed by Cloud Imperium.
The reports have also prompted predictions about timing, including suggestions of an announcement at a planned October event in Manchester. Those predictions remain community speculation. Until Cloud Imperium or Valve formally confirms a store page or launch plan, the purported achievement information should be treated as unverified.
