The Caspian Explorer update for Elite Dangerous introduces the new exploration-focused Caspian Explorer ship with enhanced jump capabilities and improved on-foot NPC combat featuring smarter AI and refined weapon handling. Additionally, the update enhances Powerplay mechanics with new undermining markers and bonuses, alongside numerous bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, with further updates expected ahead of the annual Christmas event.
The Caspian Explorer update for Elite Dangerous introduces the new Zorgon Peterson Caspian Explorer ship, which is designed primarily for exploration with impressive jump capabilities using neutron stars and exotic particles. The ship comes in three versions—Standard, Stellar, and Galactic—each offering different modules and armor options, including new Mark 2 ablative armors that allow for faster and steeper planetary entries. However, a thermal resistance issue was identified during early access, prompting Frontier to temporarily remove the mirrored surface composite armor until a fix is deployed next week.
In addition to the new ship, the update brings significant improvements to on-foot NPC combat. NPCs now have a “haste” system that adjusts their movement speed based on combat situations, making them more agile and tactically aware. They will also use better threat detection, dodge, crouch, retreat, and take cover when under fire or low on shields, replacing the old fleeing behavior. Grenade usage has been refined to target groups more effectively, and NPCs will avoid wasting EMP grenades on targets with low shields, enhancing combat realism.
Weapon handling has also been tweaked, with adjustments to draw and stow times for all weapons, changes to projectile flight times, and ammo modifications for specific weapons like the Karma C44 and the Manticor Executioner. These changes aim to balance combat and ensure smoother gameplay, particularly in on-foot scenarios. Frontier is expected to continue fine-tuning these mechanics, especially with the upcoming Operations update.
Powerplay mechanics have received updates as well, with new markers on the galaxy map indicating rival systems targeted for undermining efforts, making it easier for players to engage in these activities. Combat zones in these systems will now generate fully, enhancing the conflict aspect of Powerplay. Additionally, a 25% merit bonus has been added for undermining actions in the affected systems, which currently focus around the HIP 87621 area where new plant-based resources are located.
The update also includes numerous bug fixes addressing issues with Powerplay merit rewards, cargo transfer errors, docking interiors, and crashes in on-foot conflict zones. Cosmetic fixes and quality-of-life improvements, such as better weapon trail visuals and corrected system map displays, are also part of the patch. Looking ahead, Frontier is likely to release further updates to address any emerging issues and to prepare for the annual Christmas event, which traditionally features festive gameplay activities for Elite Dangerous players.
