Cyberpunk 2077’s New Update Has Some Problems…

Cyberpunk 2077’s Patch 2.5 introduced new content and improvements but also caused significant issues including region-locked censorship bugs, mod support disruptions, crashes, performance drops, and broken HDR functionality. While CD Projekt Red has been quick to address some problems with additional patches, ongoing bugs and performance challenges continue to affect players, with hopes for smoother gameplay and restored mod content in future updates.

Patch 2.5 for Cyberpunk 2077 has been well-received by many players, boosting player counts and positive reviews. However, the update introduced several significant issues, including a major bug that region-locked the game in Argentina due to nudity restrictions. This was an unintended application of censorship rules meant for Saudi Arabia and Japan. CD Projekt Red (CDPR) responded quickly and released a 17 GB patch specifically to fix this problem, which was mandatory for all players regardless of region.

The update also affected mod support, with several popular romance-related mods being temporarily removed due to region-specific censorship complications. Modders like Deceptius are working with CDPR to reintroduce these mods once proper censorship measures are implemented. Additionally, many players, especially on consoles, have experienced problems with achievements being blocked because their saves are incorrectly marked as modded, even if no mods were used.

Crashing issues have become widespread following the patch, with causes ranging from outdated mods, driver conflicts, to platform-specific problems. For example, on GOG, the update process was unintuitive and sometimes required a full reinstall. AMD and Nvidia users have reported black screen crashes linked to recent driver updates and Proton compatibility issues on Steam Deck. Although downgrading to patch 2.31 can temporarily resolve crashes, the root causes appear complex and multifaceted.

Performance has also taken a hit, with many players noticing FPS drops and lag despite some intentional increases in crowd and vehicle density. HDR functionality is notably broken, with black levels raised significantly, causing washed-out visuals. Console users face even more limited HDR settings. CDPR is aware of these visual issues and is working on fixes for future updates. New content like the Clampdown quest has also failed to trigger for some players, particularly those with endgame saves or mod conflicts.

Overall, patch 2.5 brings exciting new content and improvements but is marred by numerous bugs and performance regressions. While CDPR has been proactive in addressing issues quickly, the frequency and scale of new problems remain a concern. Many expect follow-up patches to resolve lingering bugs, but the ongoing cycle of fixes highlights the challenges Cyberpunk 2077 continues to face. The developer’s responsiveness offers hope, and the community eagerly awaits smoother experiences and fresh mod content in the near future.
