Cloud Imperium Games says it is planning a broad overhaul of Star Citizen ship combat, with changes aimed at time-to-kill, shields, armor behavior, fighter balance, and engineering systems.
According to developer Torsten Lehmann, the team has heard player criticism that space combat has become slower and less satisfying, especially after engineering and related changes increased survivability and extended fights. Lehmann said the studio is working on improvements, including lowering the time-to-kill for fighter-versus-fighter combat, refining shield mechanics to reduce drawn-out PvP escapes, and creating a more coherent baseline for ship balance.
The planned redesign also reaches beyond short-term tuning. CIG wants to clarify armor mechanics, better define how different weapon types interact with ships, and tie ship-part health more closely to engineering gameplay. The studio is also looking at fighter class roles and turret adjustments, while noting that combat changes can ripple into mission pacing, the in-game economy, and the overall flow of play.
CIG said the work is complex and will need thorough testing before a wider release. Some changes that had been considered for an upcoming patch were delayed so the team could test them internally and through tech preview or PTU environments first. Lehmann did not give a firm timeline, but indicated the studio wants community feedback before rolling the overhaul out more broadly.
