BREAKING NEWS: On-Foot Changes Incoming, Caspian FULL SPECS & More!

Frontier has unveiled the Caspian Explorer, a versatile new large-class ship inspired by Star Trek, featuring advanced specs and enhanced planetary handling, set to enter early access on December 2nd. Alongside this, significant on-foot gameplay improvements are coming, including smarter NPC AI and weapon rebalancing, paving the way for the integrated “Operations” experience planned for early 2025.

Frontier has released a new development blog revealing detailed information about the upcoming Caspian Explorer, the fourth and final new large-class ship arriving in Elite Dangerous this year. Inspired by Star Trek designs, the Caspian Explorer will enter ARX Early Access on December 2nd. The blog provides comprehensive internal specifications for the ship, including a Size 8 Power Plant, Size 7 Thrusters, and a Size 8 Frame Shift Drive (FSD) with a new Mark 2 variant that allows for longer supercharged jumps from White Dwarfs or Neutron Stars. The ship also features a new Mark 2 Hull Armour with a hexagonal pattern, which is expected to enable steeper, faster orbital approaches, and Mark 2 Thrusters designed to reduce gravity effects during planetary maneuvers.

Beyond exploration, the Caspian is positioned as a versatile vessel suitable for long-range trading, mining, and combat, equipped with seven hardpoints for defense. This suggests it could serve as a next-generation alternative to the popular Anaconda ship, offering a blend of exploration capabilities with combat readiness. Frontier’s design philosophy appears to focus on smoothing gameplay friction points, making the game more accessible and enjoyable, especially for newer players, with features like Supercruise Overcharge and improved planetary handling.

The update also brings significant changes to on-foot gameplay, including smarter NPC AI that will better position themselves, take cover effectively, and aggressively flush players out of cover. Weapon mechanics are being rebalanced: plasma weapons will have faster projectile speeds, lasers will do more damage to health, and kinetic weapons will be more effective against personal shields. Additionally, the resistance dynamics between shields and armor are being adjusted to narrow the effectiveness gap between laser and kinetic weapons, allowing players more flexibility in their loadouts without heavy penalties.

These on-foot changes aim to reduce frustrating gameplay elements such as constantly switching weapons to optimize damage types and dealing with slow plasma projectiles. The adjustments are seen as a prelude to the larger “Operations” gameplay set to launch early next year, with a goal to create a more cohesive experience that integrates on-foot, SRV, and starship combat. Frontier has expressed a long-term vision to unify these gameplay modes, fulfilling promises made during the Odyssey pre-launch era and enhancing the overall Elite Dangerous experience.

Finally, the blog touches on the ongoing community goal centered around the HIP 87621 system, highlighting a storyline involving a pharmaceutical discovery and a galactic enclave of defense and research establishments. While no new plot details were revealed, Frontier hinted that something much bigger is on the horizon. The developer plans to release another update video in February 2025, which is expected to provide more information about Operations and the year ahead. The community is encouraged to share their thoughts on the Caspian, on-foot gameplay improvements, and the future of the HIP 87621 storyline.
