Asteroid Bases, Cargo Ships and Laser Navigation! | Space Game Devlog #7

In this devlog for a space game, the developers showcase the new feature of asteroid bases and introduce a community-designed military cargo transport ship. They also highlight improvements to the radar system for asteroid navigation and discuss progress on ship collision damage, player death mechanics, AI navigation, and sound effects, while also sharing their plans for a proof of concept demo and encouraging viewers to join their Discord community.

In this devlog for a space game, the developers showcase a new feature they added: asteroid bases. The concept phase of the bases is shown, although the art is not final. The bases will serve as the main hub for mission-related activities in the game. The developers also introduce a ship designed by a community member, Milkman, which will be a military cargo transport and play a key role in the main demo mission.

The devlog also highlights the radar system, which now renders asteroids and shows the ship’s trajectory. This allows players to plan their course and avoid collisions. A community member, Uriah, has developed a shader that provides proximity warnings and a radial opacity effect when approaching asteroids, aiding navigation. The developers are still experimenting with the visuals and fine-tuning the shader.

Other progress includes ship collision damage, player death mechanics, and AI navigation. The developers have implemented a nav mesh system for AI ships to navigate around asteroids, despite the system being designed for gravity-based environments. They have also been exploring Unreal Engine 5’s meta sounds for creating sound effects.

To manage the overwhelming amount of learning and development tasks, the developers have decided to break up their demo concept into three stages. The first proof of concept demo will focus on asteroid navigation, ship controls, and completing objectives. This approach allows them to consolidate their goals and progress more efficiently.

The developers encourage viewers to join their Discord community, where they have received valuable feedback and support from over 600 members. They express their excitement for the progress made so far and promise to continue releasing weekly devlogs.
