4.9 Is Bringing Some BIG Upgrades For Star Citizen - First Test's Explained

The Star Citizen 4.9 update introduces instanced cooperative FPS missions with revamped Siege of Orison gameplay, featuring new mission objectives, NPCs, and the tactical addition of super heavy armor that enhances combat dynamics. While currently in PTU testing with some bugs and incomplete features, the update promises improved performance, narrative content, and deeper mission complexity, inviting player feedback ahead of the live release.

The Star Citizen 4.9 update has entered testing on the PTU, currently available on the Evocati server with a new build released recently. Unlike the initial build focused primarily on stability, the latest version allows players to experience a significant portion of the revamped Siege of Orison mission. This update introduces instancing for the first time in Star Citizen, creating private cooperative FPS missions where players and their party engage in combat across three islands, each progressively more challenging. The mission removes ship combat entirely, focusing on clearing Ninetailes resistance, resetting security towers, and defeating lieutenants culminating in a boss fight, with improved level design tailored for this instanced format.

In terms of gameplay, the current test restricts players mostly to the first island due to some bugs, such as the shuttle to the second island lacking collision. The first island retains much of the original layout but includes new mission objectives that add puzzle-solving elements beyond just combat. Players encounter new NPCs featuring updated Ninetailes armor, including samurai-inspired helmets and face masks, as well as new weapons like the CQ7 bullpup rifle, although its audio and handling are not yet finalized. Additional elements like locked cargo containers hint at future loot or mission content, but these are not fully functional in this build.

A major new feature is the introduction of super heavy armor, which players can encounter on bunker missions and even wear themselves. This armor significantly increases survivability, requiring substantial firepower to take down wearers, but it also restricts movement and combat options. Players cannot sprint or crouch with weapons drawn and must manage healing differently since the armor lacks traditional slots for med pens, necessitating manual use of med pens from inventory. Despite these limitations, the super heavy armor adds a new tactical dimension to combat encounters, especially in cooperative scenarios.

Other updates include the return of a physicalized mission giver, Reco Battaglia, located in Levski, who offers a new narrative mission chain with multiple chapters unlocked through reputation gains. Although not yet explored in detail, these missions promise additional content and rewards tied to the 4.9 patch. Furthermore, instancing now involves transferring players to separate servers with fewer players, improving performance and NPC responsiveness during Siege of Orison, which was not fully implemented in earlier tech previews.

Overall, the 4.9 PTU build brings significant changes and new content to Star Citizen, notably through instanced FPS gameplay and the introduction of super heavy armor. While some features remain incomplete or buggy, the update shows promise for enhancing both cooperative play and mission complexity. The developer continues to refine the experience, with expectations for further improvements and additional content in future PTU waves before the live release. Players are encouraged to test and provide feedback to help shape the final version.
