Squadron 42 Moves to Q2 2027 as Star Citizen Streams Spotlight Delays and Siege of Orison
Cloud Imperium Games has pushed the planned release of its single-player space-combat game Squadron 42 from 2026 to Q2 2027, extending a development timeline that dates back more than a decade.
In a statement reported by multiple outlets, Cloud Imperium CEO Chris Roberts said the studio had previously intended to ship the game in the fourth quarter of 2026, around its Intergalactic Aerospace Expo event. He said the company instead chose the second quarter of 2027 after considering the release landscape around Grand Theft Auto 6.
Roberts said he did not want Squadron 42 to launch into the “attention buzz saw” surrounding Rockstar’s game, arguing that gaming outlets and content creators would be focused on GTA 6 even though it is not due to launch on PC that November. The decision also gives the developer more time ahead of its new target.
Cloud Imperium plans to show Squadron 42 to content creators and early backers in October, according to reports on Roberts’ announcement, with a more specific release date expected to follow later.
Community streams focus on the delay and current updates
Recent Star Citizen community broadcasts have made the Squadron 42 delay a central topic while also covering the live-service game’s updates and welcoming new players. One stream included an initial microphone, platform and chat check before turning to the delay and the Siege of Orison Mk2 event.
The event has also drawn scrutiny following a separate developer broadcast intended to demonstrate how the Siege of Orison mission was designed to work. Kotaku and IGN reported that the demonstration encountered bugs and failed attempts during the session, fueling player concerns over the state of the in-development game.
The streams underscore the difficult position facing Cloud Imperium: Squadron 42 has been repeatedly delayed, while Star Citizen itself continues to operate without a full release window. Roberts has framed the new schedule as an effort to give the single-player game an appropriate launch moment, while critics and some community members have questioned whether the extended timetable also reflects continuing technical and polish work.
Squadron 42, described by Roberts as a spiritual successor to Wing Commander, began development in 2014. It is planned as a story-driven companion to the online-focused Star Citizen and features a cast that includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill and Andy Serkis.
