Star Citizen developers are planning a combat balance pass that would make fighter-versus-fighter battles end faster, while keeping larger ships tougher to kill so multi-crew and engineering gameplay still matters.

The discussion, which surfaced through community coverage of developer comments, points to a split approach: reduce time-to-kill for light fighters, but preserve or even increase time-to-disable for bigger vessels. That would let small-ship dogfights stay fast and decisive without turning capital or larger combat ships into easy targets.

According to the reports, the team has acknowledged player complaints that recent combat can feel sluggish, with long engagements and shields regenerating quickly enough to prolong fights. One proposed response is to lower shield health and recharge rates, especially to reduce what some players describe as “escape games” in PvP, where pilots can stay alive too long by running away and resetting the fight.

At the same time, developers do not appear to want a blanket reduction in durability across the board. The goal, as described in the sources, is to keep larger ships in a state where engineering, damage control, and tactical decision-making remain important. That includes supporting systems such as armor, wear and tear, and ship systems that can be disabled rather than simply destroyed.

The broader design direction seems to be moving Star Citizen combat away from a pure time-to-kill model and toward more of a time-to-disable philosophy. In that setup, battles would be less about instantly blowing ships up and more about disabling key systems, creating openings, and forcing more tactical choices in both solo and multi-crew encounters.

The sources also note that the team is being cautious about the wider consequences of faster kills. A major rebalance could affect mission difficulty, combat pacing, and the in-game economy if players can finish encounters too quickly. For that reason, the changes are still described as something being tested and refined rather than a finished overhaul.

Community reaction appears split, with some players wanting the faster, more intense combat of earlier versions and others preferring the newer engineering-heavy approach. For now, the developers seem to be trying to satisfy both camps by making fighter combat snappier without stripping larger ships of the layered defenses and crew roles that have become central to the game’s combat model.
