BREAKING NEWS: Stellar Lighting REWORK+ Operation FIRESTORM | Elite Dangerous

Frontier Developments announced that Elite Dangerous will launch Operations on June 30th, featuring six cooperative missions like Operation Firestorm Rescue, which challenges players to work together to evacuate hostages from a hostile station while managing multiple objectives. Alongside this, a stellar lighting rework will restore the game’s vivid star colors and enhance cosmic visuals, revitalizing the game’s immersive space environment.

Frontier Developments has released a new devlog for Elite Dangerous, revealing exciting updates including the official launch date for Operations and a stellar lighting rework. Operations will launch on June 30th and feature six distinct missions that commanders can undertake. Players will be able to engage in Operations in either regular mode or power play mode, with the latter offering merits and opportunities to undermine target systems. Additionally, Operations will have two difficulty levels, “easy” and presumably “hard,” and players can use character emotes while waiting on the pre-operation screen.

The devlog focuses on one of the six Operations called Operation Firestorm Rescue, previously titled Burning Rescue. This mission is entirely ship-based and involves a squad of four commanders working together to evacuate over 2,300 hostages trapped inside a station under attack. The station’s blast doors are sealed shut, and environmental jammers and incinerators have been deployed to increase the station’s internal heat, making the rescue more challenging. Players must hack or destroy these obstacles while contending with hostile forces trying to stop them.

Successful completion of Operation Firestorm Rescue requires teamwork and coordination, as players must simultaneously manage multiple objectives, including opening blast doors, disabling environmental jammers, shutting down incinerators, and safely evacuating hostages. If a commander dies during the mission, they will respawn repaired and refueled on the operations runner, a mini carrier that serves as the mission launch point. The assets shown in the devlog are from a work-in-progress build, so some balancing and adjustments are expected before release.

In addition to Operations, Frontier is rolling out a comprehensive stellar lighting overhaul alongside the update. This rework aims to restore the intense and varied color palette of stars seen before the Odyssey expansion in 2021, which had softened the game’s stellar coloration to accommodate on-foot gameplay. The lighting update will bring back more dramatic hues and tones to star systems, enhancing visual immersion. The background galaxy image and stellar dust clouds, especially around the galactic rim, have also been refreshed using real-world references to improve realism and contrast.

Overall, these updates mark a significant enhancement to Elite Dangerous, combining new cooperative gameplay content with a major visual upgrade. The Operations update promises engaging, team-based missions requiring strategy and communication, while the stellar lighting rework aims to rekindle the game’s striking cosmic visuals. Players are encouraged to prepare their ships for Operations and look forward to exploring the newly vibrant star systems when the update launches at the end of June.
