CitizenCon is an annual convention for the video game Star Citizen, which has been in development for nearly a decade. Over the years, the focus of the event has shifted from being primarily a marketing event to a more informative one. The first CitizenCon in 2013 had a small indie feel and mainly focused on immediate updates. As the years went on, the event began to showcase more tangible progress, such as the unveiling of the persistent universe in 2014 and the introduction of gameplay demos in subsequent years.
However, the event hasn’t been without its controversies. In 2016, the presentation at CitizenCon set unrealistic expectations with a roadmap that promised features and updates that would take years to materialize. The following years saw improvements in the format and production of the event, with more detailed updates from different teams within the company. The 2021 digital show was particularly focused on explaining the underlying technologies driving the game and highlighting the progress that had been made.
Despite the challenges and missteps along the way, CitizenCon continues to provide an important platform for the developers to communicate with the community and offer updates on the game’s development. While the event has evolved and changed over the years, its significance as an annual milestone for Star Citizen remains.
